WINNER / BEST PICTURE (Palme d’Or) / 2004 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

In the most provocative film of 2004, Academy Award© winner Michael Moore (2002 Best Documentary, Bowling for Columbine) presents a searing examination of the role played by money and oil in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11. Moore blends captivating and thought-provoking footage with revealing interviews, while balancing it all with his own brand of humor and satire.

Produced in part by the now-notorious Harvey Weinstein, the film expertly uses archival and newsreel footage along with Moore’s pointedly ironic narration to paint a portrait of American power that is both unsettling and, true to the filmmaker’s style, darkly humorous.

Fahrenheit 9/11, which has lost little of its power since its theatrical release, reminds us that politics, money and propaganda have played a part in American lives for decades.

The film begins with the highly contested Presidential election of 2000, in which the Supreme Court had to intervene because of issues with the Florida vote count, eventually handing the presidency to Bush over former Vice President Al Gore. From there Moore, who won the Best Documentary Academy Award for Bowling for Columbine, runs venomously rampant against the president and his father, President George H.W. Bush. Moore also makes sure we know that he views cabinet members and advisors suspiciously in their response to the attacks, questioning their motives regarding the War in Afghanistan, the Iraq War and the pursuit of acquiring and controlling the oil supply in the Middle East.
