Based on Aussie comedian Damian Callinan’s successful one man stage show…

“Set against the political backdrop of Australia’s refugee policy and the racism it generates, Mark Grentell’s The Merger (2018) uses the genre of the sports film to explore – and ultimately challenge – the attitudes around this hotly contested topic.” – The Conversation

Troy Carrington, a former professional football player returns to his country town after an abrupt end to his sporting career and is persuaded to coach the hapless local footy team, the Roosters

The former star footballer now turned social justice campaigner befriends a young wannabe filmmaker who recently lost his father and is persuaded, despite opposition, into coaching the town’s struggling team. He then recruits refugees to make up the team with hilarious results, taking the community on a journey of change. Despite the challenges, as a Grand Final Win emerges as a possibility, the locals and refugees that combine the team realize that The Merger has already won!
