A short documentary film about the making of the incredible Don Giovanni production with Plácido Domingo in the Estates Theatre gives you a brilliant insight about the creation of this unique production through an interview with Plácido Domingo and the organizational team. Recorded in Prague Oct. 27 and 29, 2017.

“Practically the first thing any visitor learns about Prague is that the world premiere of Mozart’s Don Giovanni took place here, with Mozart conducting on Oct. 29, 1787.” – Prague TV. The Estates Theatre is the only theater left standing in the world where Mozart conducted one of his operas.

“If there is such a thing as a perfect opera, Don Giovanni is certainly a top candidate,” Domingo said in a press release. “It has everything: high drama, high comedy, sex, jealousy, farce – one of the best libretti and some of the greatest music ever written. It is pure genius from start to finish.”

Offering an in-depth, authentic and unique chance to be brought behind the scenes of a masterminded anniversary production, Director Gabriela Bohacova, teamed with producers ArtMuse Ltd. and the Domingo-Mozart-Prague org. to create a wonderful program for students of Opera and performance.

The production was based on the 1969 National Theatre Opera staging with a famous set by designer Josef Svoboda and stage direction by Václav Kašlík. This production made use of costumes by Oscar-winner Theodor Pištěk who worked on Miloš Forman’s 1984 film Amadeus.

According to InstantEncore “Placido Domingo viewed the original 1787 score of Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Prague and then proceeded to conduct the opera at the very theater at which Mozart conducted the world premiere of his famous work. The performance on October 27th occurred exactly 230 years from the original performance. The original score was on loan from the Prague Conservatory“. The two performances were filmed by Czech Television.
